Hi all,

In "The Wealth of Nations," precisely what does the author mean by "stock"? Inventory? Or shares of common stock that traded by investors on an exchange? (Don't laugh. There was a stock exchange in Amsterdam in the 1600s. Joseph de la Vega wrote about it in his book "Confusion of Confusions." So stock trading goes back at least a century before the "Wealth of Nations" was first published.)

Or could he have been referring to something else?

The context sometimes seems to refer to "stock" as if he meant inventory, but sometimes not.

I hope that someone knows the answer and that this does not BECOME a debate. I realize that the site is supposed to be for debating rather than fundamental questions, but given how wildly off-topic some of the posts are (weight-loss spam, etc.), I don't see any harm in asking. I didn't find any other question-answering forum that looked promising.
